Should I Rent a Car in Aruba? When You Need One and When You Don't

Aruba is small, the roads are good, and there are buses, taxis and organized tours. So do you actually need a rental car?
It depends on your days, not on the island. This guide sets out which days a car earns its keep, which days it doesn't, and how the bus and the taxi compare, with a source for every number.

What the bus really costs and where it goes
Arubus is the inexpensive option, and it works best on the hotel strip.
Line 10 (L10A, L10B and L10C) runs from the main station in Oranjestad along the hotel strip to Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and Arashi Beach. The main station is right across from the cruise terminal. Line 2 stops at the airport.
Carry-on only
Arubus does not accept luggage on its buses, only carry-on items.
Not around the clock
Aruba's public buses do not operate 24 hours a day.
The south takes transfers
Baby Beach takes three buses: L10 to the main station in Oranjestad, L1, L2 or L3 to San Nicolas, then L900 to Baby Beach. The fare is $2.60 per person, per trip.
Not wheelchair accessible
Arubus says its buses are not yet wheelchair accessible.

Taxis: fixed fares and no meter
Taxis in Aruba have no meters, so the fare depends on the route, and you should confirm it before you ride.
Fixed rates
Rates are fixed and should be checked in advance. They must be shown in Aruban florins and in US dollars.
Up to 7 passengers
A taxi carries up to 7 passengers, not counting children under 2. A surcharge applies after the fourth passenger.
Surcharges
Sundays, official holidays and the hours from 11 PM to 7 AM carry a surcharge.
Licensed
All taxis in Aruba have permits and show TX on the license plate.

The days a car earns its keep
Three kinds of day are where a rental pays off.
1: Trails, the Natural Pool and the eastern beaches
A 4x4 is needed for the Natural Pool, the eastern beaches past San Nicolas and Arikok's unpaved interior trails. Arikok entry is $22 per person, free for children under 17 (acf.aw, checked 20 Sep 2026). Our driving guide covers the rules and the routes.
2: Groups, families and luggage
Arubus takes carry-on items only, and a taxi carries up to 7 passengers with a surcharge after the fourth. Real Deal's fleet includes SUVs that seat 6 to 8 passengers and a 12-passenger van.
3: Remote beaches and out-of-the-way dinners
Remote beaches and off-the-beaten-path restaurants are what a rental car makes easy. You leave when you like and stay as long as you like.
The question is not whether Aruba needs a car. It is which days of your trip do.
The days you can skip the car
On the hotel strip and in Oranjestad, you can manage without one.
From the main station in Oranjestad, Arubus routes L10A, L10B and L10C run along the hotel strip to Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and Arashi Beach. Cruise passengers are welcome to use them.
If you do drive into Oranjestad, AruParking spaces are available Monday to Saturday from 7 AM to 9 PM. Paid parking is closed on Sundays and official holidays.
